The Deep Insight

The possibility of a auto industry bailout seems eminent with each passing day.  All the lobbying to Washington by the Big Three seems to have worked.  A estimated $17 billion bailout is in the works and could be passed as soon as tonight.  The know-nothings in Washington are coming up with some rather bizarre ways to oversee this bailout.  The most troubling idea in my opinion is the creation of a “car czar” to oversee this bailout.

I swear every-time there is a crisis of some sort in Washington, they feel compelled to need a czar for this or a czar for that. What are we Imperial Russia!    What does the government know about running a car company?  Supposedly this czar would have the power to write guideline’s for the restructuring of GM, Chrysler and Ford Motor Company.  I’m sorry but these are private entities, why should the government have any say “restructuring”  their business model?

Sure the Big Three might not have the smartest CEO’s but it is not their fault that the bottom fell out of the economy without warning.  I think that the credit crisis caught them flat-footed if anything.  The cars that the Big Three have been putting out in recent years have improved significantly in terms of style, quality and fuel efficiency.  I think that these companies know the industry better than the government and should stay out of trying to dictate what they should  be doing.  When does the expansion of government intervention stop? First its the financial sector, now its the auto industry, what’s next? I think this is a distrubing trend if you ask me.
