Should the United Nations be dissolved?

Should the United Nations be dissolved?  This is a question that I would like to ask everyone.  The U.N. has been around since the end of World War II.  The aim of the U.N was to promote peace and prosperity between countries through communication.  They believed that if all of the countries of the world came together in a forum to discuss their grievances with each other, peace would prevail.  This idea sounds great in theory but in practice it has been at best ineffective.  The U.N. is a lion with no teeth, it should be put to rest for its own good!  The U.N. passes laws condemning acts of genocide, terrorism and other state abuses but do nothing about them.  What good is a strong worded condemnation going to do?  Words alone do not stop authoritarian regimes or terrorist from killing innocent people for political gain.  This is evident in the case of Darfur, where thousands of people have been killed and millions more displaced over political conflict.  The U.N. has labeled what is on-going in Darfur a genocide, and has leveled charges of crimes against humanity against the president of Sudan Omar al-Bashir.  Why is he still in office?  If the U.N actually believed in what they supposedly stand for they would go in and get this guy.  The U.N. has stood listlessly by why people suffer.

This also happened in Rwanda, where millions of people died in a unnecessary slaughter.  Where was the U.N. then?  They did not intervene until their guilty conscious kicked in.  They funny thing is, the U.N. has passed laws which was signed by numerous countries stating that it is OK for the U.N. to go in and intervene if there are acts of genocide and/or crimes against humanity in a given country.  Why don’t they use this power?  They claim to represent the weak and the down trodden but when the people of the world call for help, it seems to fall on deaf ears.  When will they truly start helping the world become a better place? I guess when world leaders start taking the U.N. seriously…
